Caution! Reassessing Travel Plans to Rhodes Amidst Wildfires

The idyllic Greek island of Rhodes, a popular vacation spot known for its stunning beaches and ancient ruins, is currently facing a severe crisis. Major wildfires have been raging on the island for several days, leading to mass evacuations of both locals and tourists. The situation has prompted the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry to urge citizens to reconsider their travel plans to Rhodes. The ministry is closely monitoring the situation and is in contact with local authorities, advising Lithuanians in Greece to heed the recommendations of local services.

Tour operators have been working diligently to ensure the safety of their customers. For instance, Novaturas, one of the largest tour operators in the Baltics, confirmed that their customers have been moved or evacuated to safe areas in the northern part of the island. However, the situation for independent travelers remains uncertain. The wildfires have sparked the biggest Greek evacuation operation ever in response to a fire, with authorities transporting some 16,000 people across land, 3,000 evacuated by sea, and others fleeing by road or using their own transport.

In these challenging times, it’s crucial for potential travelers to stay informed and prioritize safety. While the allure of Rhodes is undeniable, the current situation calls for caution and responsible decision-making. Let’s stand in solidarity with the people of Rhodes and look forward to the day when we can safely return to enjoy the island’s beauty and hospitality.
